10th EuroAfriCa-ICT FP7 Awareness Workshop successfully held in Kampala

Over 90 delegates from 13 countries in Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean participated in the 10th EuroAfriCa-ICT FP7 Awareness Workshop held at Protea Hotel in Kampala, Uganda on 20 & 21 October 2008. The 2-day workshop was organized by the EuroAfriCa-ICT project and hosted by Makerere University Faculty of Computing and IT as a key partner in the EuroAfriCa-ICT project. The aim of this workshop was to create awareness on opportunities offered by the European Commission's Seventh Framework Program (FP7) targeting organizations or projects in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and Europe. Being the first workshop of its kind to be organized in the country, the Honourable Minister of Education and sports Mrs Geraldine Bitamazire who opened the workshop on behalf of the Prime Minister Hon. Apollo Nsibambi stressed that, investments in ICT are a key factor in driving innovation in companies, productivity growth, honing competitiveness, cutting red tape and creating jobs. She stressed that organizing workshops of this nature creates platforms and opportunities of networking for key stakeholders to share visions and map the way forward in the ICT field. Mr. Harvey Rouse, Head of political and trade section at the European Union delegation to Uganda emphasized the increased interest of the European Commission to work with sub-Saharan Africa in reducing the digital divide and noted the various opportunities for collaboration between the two regions. ICT authorities gave keynote addresses from the region covering research capacities, the role of government in fostering ICT research, guidelines to answer FP7 ICT Calls for proposals and successful initiatives addressing S&T in sub-Saharan Africa were also introduced. At the event, Makerere University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Meraka Institute of CSIR, South Africa. The signing of a Memorandum of cooperation between the Meraka Institute and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, holds the potential for productive collaboration between these two institutions as expressed by Mrs Kagiso Chikane, Centre Manager of the Meraka Institute. The meeting took a turn on day two where participants were invited to participate in the "Birds of a feather" thematic sessions of which the idea is to allow participants to engage in discussions following different thematic topics and consider possibilities or potential for future collaboration under FP7 with European organizations. The meeting was then closed with remarks from the Project Coordinator of the EuroAfriCa-ICT project and Managing Director of Orionis, Ms Karine Valin, and the Dean of Makerere University Faculty of Computing and IT, Prof Venansius Baryamureeba.
