The SALA+ project, aiming at connecting Latin America and Europe through R&D cooperation in the networked electronic media (NEM) area, has been officially launched today for a period of 24 months at the kick-off meeting held in Santiago de Chile, which usefully allowed to specify, organize and plan into more details the various short-term activities of this initiative. The SALA+ project is a collaborative European project funded by the Directorate General Information Society and Media of the European Commission developed under the FP7 (Seventh Framework Program for Research and Technological Development), including Homega Research in its partnership. SALA+ has been specifically designed to support the implementation of the objective "Networked Media" of the European Commission's ICT Work Program by supporting strategic cooperation opportunities of mutual interest between Latin America and Europe in the Networked Electronic Media (NEM) area. The project also aims at analysing and building upon existing R&D programs and key organizations involved in the NEM field in order to propose new thematic priorities for strategic cooperation in the NEM field and support the development of a Strategic Research Agenda for R&D cooperation between Europe and Latin America in the NEM field, taking into account the European Commission's FP7 Work Program, and other initiatives such as the NEM Strategic Research Agenda, etc. SALA+ will organize 16 workshops and seminars in Latin America to create awareness and promote the Euro-LatAm cooperation in the NEM field and provide the NEM communities from both regions with opportunities to strengthen their relations and work together on potential cooperation projects, namely in the framework of FP7. Initial awareness on the SALA+ concept has been made in Lima on February 29, 2008 during a Euro-Peru cooperation event and further workshops and seminars will be organized in Honduras, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ecuador, Paraguay and Venezuela.
