A successful edition of the first CAPS conference

July 2, 2014

News_CAPS2014_Sigma-OrionisSigma Orionis is proud to have organized the first international event on collective awareness platforms for sustainability and social innovation (CAPS), held under the aegis of the European Commission in Brussels on July 1-2, and for which over 500 delegates registered.

On July 1, the CAPS2014 Off part of the event, held at The Egg, has offered a dynamic schedule of talks, unconferences, workshops, hands-on sessions and networking moments.

On July 2, the CAPS2014 Conference part, which took place at the European Commission (Charlemagne building), has been formally opened by a video message from Mr Robert Madelin, DG of European Commission’s DG Connect. It has provided participants with an overview of current projects and initiatives, and included an information session on the upcoming CAPS Call under Horizon 2020.

The CAPS2014 website includes full report on the two days.

The CAPS domain is an emerging but promising one. The vision is that (open, non-commercially driven) ICT-based platforms can offer a powerful mean to connect together (forming communities) and to the outside world (Internet of Things) and thus to:

  • be better informed (extended awareness),
  • more efficiently share knowledge and join forces (crowdsourcing, participatory design, collective intelligence, collective decisions),
  • be in a better position to engage, innovate (creativity) and act, individually or collectively, namely towards societally, environmentally and economically sustainable approaches and solutions to tackle societal challenges: growth and employment, environment, climate change, health and education, inclusive societies, wellbeing, etc.
