Cloud Computing is deployed now on the back of an Internet that is based on IPv4 with its address space totally depleted. The current Internet will further use NATs (Network Address Translation) especially CGNS (Carrier Grade NATs) which inhibits end-to-end security to the detriment of Cloud Computing deployment. Creating Inter-Cloud Computing is doomed to failure since the interoperability cannot be done end-to-end. The move from own infrastructure to a cloud infrastructure has many benefits and many challenges, involving security issues. Regardless, Gartner survey (CIO Agenda 2010) confirms the expected potential of Cloud Computing. In the study, 2014 CIOs predict a much faster adaptation of cloud services than originally expected. Currently, 3 percent of the respondents indicate that the majority of their IT is running in the cloud. Over the next four years, they expect this share to grow up to 43 percent.
Cloud adoption and IPv6 transition are two major inflexion points that shape the evolution of IT today and are the foundation of Next Generation IT infrastructures. The envisioned target architecture combines the agility of cloud with the scalability of IPv6. The first ever IPv6-only OpenStack Cloud used to deliver production services has been deployed as pilot through the Gen6 project (Government Enabled Through IPv6) by the University of Luxembourg together with Nephos6 and Citkomm. The objective was to demonstrate in practice how government organizations can deliver scalable services in the future.
In the last few years, the European Commission has been promoting the rapid adoption of Cloud Computing in all sectors of the economy in order to boost productivity. In September 2012, the EC adopted a strategy for ”Unleashing the Potential of Cloud Computing in Europe”. The strategy outlines actions to deliver a net gain of 2.5 million new European jobs, and an annual boost of €160 billion to the European Union GDP (around 1%), by 2020. The strategy, designed to speed up and increase the use of Cloud Computing across all economic sectors, is the result of an analysis of the overall policy, regulatory and technology landscapes and of a wide consultation with stakeholders. Part of this strategy, the European Commission has established the European Cloud Partnership (ECP) and has been supporting the Cloud for Europe project to provide operational support.
In recent years, the Chinese government has prioritized the development of Cloud Computing technology with the twin goals of expanding Chinese military and civilian access to cloud computing information technology (IT) resources and creating an internationally competitive Chinese Cloud Computing service industry. As part of a larger development strategy for advancing Chinese software and information technology services, the Chinese government plans to make more than one billion dollars (USD) available over the next few years to drive Cloud Computing development.
