The EU-China FIRE workshop on testbeds federation was successfully organised on January 13-15, 2015 in Beijing, China.
This three-day event featured:
• A Fed4FIRE tutorial on Day 1 and Day 2, giving a general introduction to the Fed4FIRE initiative and providing in-depth information on the participating testbeds;
• A workshop on Day 3, to discuss standards and tools for federation, and EU-China testbeds cooperation.
This event brought together more than 40 attendees from the Chinese and European Future Internet test beds research community who shared test facilities, connected together and ran experimentations at larger scale.

All countries understand the need to set up test beds to support their research and this is particular true in the very broad range of Future Internet research. As testbeds are expensive and can be limited in scope, it is important to combine forces and present all possibilities for experimenting to researchers; either offering a broad range of technologies that a single test bed cannot offer, or creating a large scale environment that all test beds together can provide. There are today worldwide techniques to federate test beds and in particular from the US with their GENI concept, or from the EU with the FIRE portfolio of testbeds and the specific Fed4FIRE project focusing on federation
The goal of this workshop was to bring together EU-China test beds using worldwide federation techniques so that researchers from both the EU and China could share test facilities; connecting them together provides even a broader possibility of experimentation and at a larger scale.
While there is a national move towards CENI, Chinese testbeds might not be aware of the federation techniques used in the EU and US. This objective of this workshop was to organise a 2-day tutorial to understand such techniques (i), to discuss in an open workshop on the 3rd day how Chinese testbeds can use, or not, such techniques (ii) and to discuss ways of cooperation and plan to move forward (iii).
Innovative service and application development is boosted by having access to large scale testbed infrastructures. The Fed4FIRE project opens up Europe’s most pioneering pilot and testbed facilities to SMEs for early trials and experiments of their products and services. Fed4FIRE adds a new dimension to the development cycle. It offers unique opportunities especially for SMEs that now can profit from experimentation facilities all over Europe.
The Fed4FIRE Tutorial Days gave a general introduction to the Fed4FIRE initiative and provided in-depth information on the participating test beds. The event was directed towards experimenters and testbed providers. However, participation was open to interested 3rd parties, especially SMEs that wanted to learn more on how they can profit from Fed4FIRE facilities.

The objective of the EU-China Testbeds Federation Workshop was to understand the status of standards and tools for federation, in particular the global approaches supported by EU FIRE (Fed4FIRE). Discussion included how China could also use the same approach and thereby federate with EU experimental platforms, and on cooperation between EU and China on test beds. Several test beds in China benefited to understand how to federate using worldwide techniques such as promoted by the EU Fed4FIRE project.
